Yoshioka Ichimonji - Juyo #49

JT0012

 SOLD

Yoshioka Ichimonji katana o-suriage, mumei.  Hawatare 70.9 cm (27.92 inches). The jigane is a o-mokume nagare with chikei and a very strong choji midare utsure.  The hamon is nioi deki choji midare, with a tighter habuchi than seen in Fukaoka.  There are gifu and a great deal of hataraki.  Although this blade is nioi deki, there are many nie patterns, sunagashi, kinsuji, and inazuma, especially in the front portion of the sword.  This sword is from the latter part of Kamakura.

There is sayagaki by Tanobe Michihiro stating that this blade is chinchinchocho.  Chincho is an especially precious treasure, and the doubling is for emphasis.

The Yoshioka Ichimonji ran from around Sho-o (1288 - 1293) to around Shohei (1346 - 1370).  They were descendants of the Fukaoka Ichimonji, and were named for their location.  It is believed that the  founder of the school, Yoshioka Sukeyoshi, was the grandson of Fukaoka Ichimonji Sukemune.
