An impressive very hade utsushi of an o-suriage koto tachi by Nakayama Yoshikazu. Shinogizukure, iroi mune,  slightly extended chu kissaki, fumbari (in this case meaning taper). The nakago is suriage, kiri jiri, three mekugi ana. I believe that this its original state. Hawatare; 2 shaku 9 sun 2 bu (88.18 cm or 34.72"). Motohaba: 3.25 cm. Sakihaba: 1.88 cm. Kasane: 6.7 mm. Gunome, mixed with slightly togare and hako gunome. The spaces between the gunome are deep. There is profuse sunagashi, kinsuji, inazuma, nado. The jigane is o-mokume nagare, hada tatsu, chikei, nado. The boshi is hakaki becoming ichimai on one side. The long kaeri extends into muneaki running the length of the blade, becoming pencil thin as it descends toward the machi. In new polish, mounted in older shirasaya and copper habaki. NBTHK hozon kanteisho.

Nakayama Yoshikazu worked around Tenpo (1830 - 1844). He was a student of Ikkansai Yoshihiro, who made utsushi of Norishige and Go Yoshihiro. He lived at Ueno, his work can be found in Ueshu Toko.  Polisher, Robert Benson commented that this is a very well made sword, and that he was surprised that this is shinshinto.                                                                                                                $13,500
