Sukenao Gimei Katana

A late nineteenth / early twentieth century sword signed, Tsuda Takagi no Kami Sukenao, dated  Genroku nen ni gatsu hi (a day in February 1693).     Hawatare  2 Saku 3 Sun2 Bu  6 rin (70.2  cm  / 27.64").   Mottohaba: 3.1 cm.  Sakihaba:  2.1  Kasane:  7 mm.    Chu suguba.  Tight itame hada.  Dragon cashing a tama horimono, with a bonji on the rreverse.  The blade is in good health and without damage.  Some light staining, and a bit of spider rust that may be cleaned with oil and uchiko. 

Mounted in samurai koshirae.  The tsuka is wrapped in the style seen in Higo and Satsuma.  The fuchi is deep black shakudo of waves and chidori in katakiribori  and keibori, with a chidori  in takazogan.  The kashira in an iron Higo mountain trail with gold cherry blossoms .   The tsuba is a good Kyosukahi, the black lacquer saya has become split needing a bit of glue.  There is a large iron kojiri. 

This clearly a gimei of the famous 17th century Tsuda Sukenao.  It is a very attractive package well worth having for the beginning collector, decorator, or for someone wants an attractive samurai sword without investing many thousands of dollars and many hours of study.    $4,250
