Sashu Masafusa Katana

A fine mumei shinshinto Satsuma Katana attributed to Sashu Masafusa. Hawatare: 2 shaku 0 sun 7 bu (62.725 cm or 24.695"). Motohaba: 3.17 cm. Sakihaba: 2.3 cm. Kasane: 7 mm. Shinogizukure with a shallow sori, slightly elongated chu kissaki. Two short futatsubi and a long bohi on both the omote and the ura. There is a slight ububa remaining. The hamon is a chu shuguba notare with gunome based in ko nie. There is sunagashi, longitudinal hataraki, kinsuji, and imo-zuru (sweet potato vines). The jigane is o-mokume nagare mixed with masame. There is ji nie and chikei. Mounted in shirasaya with a solid silver habaki. There is an accompanying kyugunto koshirae with leather cover in excellent condition, mounted with a tsunagi. He is rated Chujosaku in Nihon Toko Jiten - Shinto Hen by Fujishiro, and valued at 2,500,000 yen in Toko Taikan by Shibata. He is pictured in Shinto Taikan. There is NBTHK Hozon kanteisho.
The first generation Masafusa was a son of Bingo Ujifusa and worked in Satsuma around Kanei (1624 - 1644). He was followed by several generations of Masafusa. The nakago of the rokudai, pictured in Shinshinto Taikan matches this sword in shape and yasurimei. The rokudai was active around Bunka (1804 - 1818) and the seventh generation was active around Kaei (1848 - 1854). Their work is rarely seen.
