From the Alan Harvie* collection, a splendid Nara tsuba that is easily over looked, due to simplicity of design. 7.02 cm x 6.82 cm 3.7 mm The metal is dense, well worked, ishimei ground, fine color and condition, and displays numerous tekotsu (note the rim pictures). The rugged tree is carved from the plate, not inlaid, The basket and two fruit are gold utori (sheet gold applied to the iron), the branches are honzogan shinchu, as are the devices to the right. There are shakudo sekigane in the hitsuana. The reverse has fish nets. Murakami Kanteisho rating the tsuba as Jojosaku. This a guard for the serious collector.
*Alan Harvie, a long time resident of the San Francisco Bay area, life-long collector, and close friend of Robert Haynes. He is noted for his scholarship and excellent taste in iron tsuba.
