Muromachi Tsuba

S0473

 SOLD

A large sukashi iron tsuba from early Muromachi, as per Robert Haynes.   9.2 cm x 8.9 cm x 3.9 mm.  Profuse granular tekotsu and very good color.  Unfortunately, the tsuba was allowed out in the elements, or perhaps exposed to ocean air, so while the seppa dai is in good condition, the rest of the tsuba had been rusted.   While it has been cleaned, the various hardness of metal allowed for an uneven pitting.  Still and all, an important example of early Muromachi tsuba.  Referencing Sasano, tsuba of this size and shape can be found from Embun (1356 - 1361)  to Oei (1394 - 1428)
