Kaga no Kami Fujiwara Kanetaka
S0167
A zaimei katana signed Kaga no Kami Fujiwara Kanetaka. Shinogizukure, Iroi mune, chu kissaki shallow zori. Hawatare: 2 Shaku 2 sun 9 bu 6.8 rin (69.6 cm or 27.4"). Motohaba: 3.09 cm. Sakihaba: 2.19 cm. Kasane: 7.1 mm. Chu suguba with boiling ko nie, the ko nie in the habuchi climbs and mixes with the ji nie approaching the shinogi toward the front of the blade. Moist itame hada with very fine and bright ko nie. The boshi is a ko maru with a long kaeri. The nakago is suriage and slightly machiokure. Good old polish.
A good quality copper habaki, otherwise the koshirae is a g.i. special. The saya has been refinished, and the silver wire wrap on saya and tsuka, while cute, just aren't right. The same is small grained and not especially good. Newly made shirasaya.
There were three generations of Kanetaka, the shodai worked in Kansei (1624 - 1644), the nidai in Joo ((1652 - 1655), and the sandai in Genroku (1688 - 1704). Since this blade closely resembles Kambun (1661 - 1673) style, I would tend to think that it is the work of either late work of the nidai, or early work of the sandai. $2,950
