Kanebo Masatsugu Wakizashi

A wakizashi signed Nanto Ju  Kanebo Masatsugu.   Hawatare: 1 shaku 3 sun 6 bu (41.21 cm or 16.22 inches).  Motohaba: 3.09 cm.  Kasane:  5.1 mm.  Hirazukure, iroi mune, shallow sori.  The hamon is a complex gunome midare and choji midare, the gunome separate forming a nijuba gunome. Tempered in nioi shimari, the habuchi is deep and rich, with many wide ashi approaching the ha.  There is a great deal of hataraki, short and long kinsuji, sunagashi, nado. The ji is forged in o-mokume nagare and masame.  There is profuse ji nie and large, bright chikei patterns.  There is a midare utsure in layers.  There are horimono of bonji on both sides, futatsubi on the omote and suken on the ura.  The much faded sayagaki reads, Mei Nanto ju Kanebo Masatsugu.  ? dai (generation).   Temmon gurai (around 1532) Hawatare: 1 shaku 3 sun 6 bu. Yamato Kuni  ?  Kuroda Iye?   ? Kakihan (the reading of the name is only a guess).  Niju gold foil habaki.  NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon kanteisho. 

He was active around Eiroku (1558 - 1570) Note: this disagrees with the sayagaki.  He is rated Chu Saku in Nihon Toko Jiten - Koto Hen with a sharpness rating of wazamono;  rated with a double circle in Nihon To Meikan; and valued at 3,000,000 in Shibata's Toko Taikan.
