Kamakura Bori Tsuba

TS0256

A large classic example of Kamakura Bori tsuba.   8.06 cm x 7.57 cm x   2.5 mm.  Muromachi jidai, probably after Onin (1467 - 1469) when imported Chinese literature was very popular.   Kamakura tsuba are often mistakenly though of to be from the Kamakura jidai.  In the Kansei region these tsuba were called, Kanto (Eastern plains) tsuba, or Odawara tsuba.  Because they are not signed, there is record of who these smiths were, but it is speculated that they descended from katchushi nado.     Because of the immense popularity of these tsuba, there were many knock-offs produced, thus Kamakura tsuba now fall into two distinct groups, good and bad.  This is clearly of the former classification.   NBTHK Hozon kanteisho.   Boxed $1,300
